How to stay safe during natural disasters

Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes are an unavoidable part of nature. They can be extremely dangerous and cause heavy damages to property, wildlife and even us humans. They are often unpredictable, so knowing how to deal with them beforehand is crucial to your survival.

Here are some safety precautions to take during different types of natural disasters:

Tornadoes:

If you live in an area that is prone to tornadoes, locate the safest basement or storm shelter. Know the difference between a tornado watch and tornado warning. A watch means conditions are favorable for a tornado to form, while a warning means one has been sighted in the area and you should take cover immediately. If you are outside when a tornado forms, try to get into a building or car for protection. If you are unable to do so, lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area and cover your head with your hands.

Hurricanes:

If you live in an area that is prone to hurricanes, have a plan in place for where you will go if one forms. This could be evacuation routes out of the area or a safe room in your home. Stock up on supplies such as food, water, and batteries ahead of time so you don’t have to leave your home during the storm. During the hurricane, stay inside and away from windows. If possible, bring any outside furniture or objects inside.

Earthquakes:

If you live in an area that is prone to earthquakes, make sure you know the safest places to take shelter. This could be under a sturdy table or desk, in an interior room away from windows, or outside in an open space. If you are caught in a building during an earthquake, do not use the elevators. Try to stay calm and wait for the shaking to stop before exiting the building.

Floods:

If there is flooding in your area, follow evacuation orders if given by authorities. Do not try to drive through floodwaters, as they can be deeper and faster-moving than they appear. If you are stuck in your car during a flood, abandon it and seek higher ground immediately.
