Fire alarm regulations in the workplace


Alarms play a crucial role in preventing fatal outcomes during fire outbreaks. For this reason, their application is subject to the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

It is stated in the Regulatory Reform that:

[…] the premises are, to the extent that it is appropriate, equipped with proper fire-fighting equipment and fire detectors and alarms.

This statement means that fire alarms are mandatory most of the time. An exception is represented by businesses with less than five employees working in the same small space where the alarm can be raised vocally. Since this scenario is relatively rare today, most companies must comply with the law and install fire alarms. They are essential to save lives and allow people to evacuate safely, but they can also prevent the destruction of buildings and properties, usually valuable assets.

Maintenance and servicing

In addition to alarm installation, regulations require that business owners or their delegates provide periodic maintenance. The responsible person must inspect the alarms daily and test them weekly. In case of issues, they must take immediate action to solve them and restore proper functioning. Moreover, fire alarms must undergo servicing by certified professionals at least every six months. All the abovementioned procedures are essential to guarantee that fire alarms are fully-operational to keep workplaces and workers as safe as possible.
